WEST LONG BRANCH – In celebration of National Hispanic Heritage Month, Monmouth University is hosting a series of events to celebrate Hispanic heritage. All events are free and open to the public.
Latin Dance Lessons will be held 6 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 3, in Anacon Hall, Rebecca Stafford Student Center. Learn dance moves from a local master in the art of Latin dance. Event sponsored by the School of Humanities and Social Sciences and Latin American Student Organization.
Andrew Mejer: Perspectives on Immigration and the Law will be at 4:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 8, in Magill Commons Club Dining Room. Mejer is a lawyer who specializes in local immigration issues will speak about immigration and the law.
The film El Barrio Tours will be shown 1 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 15, in Wilson Auditorium. Director Andrew Padilla will screen his documentary and discuss his vision for the film. An in-depth look at the phenomena of gentrification as seen through the change in the largest Puerto Rican neighborhood in the 50 states: East Harlem. Event sponsored by the School of Humanities and Social Sciences.
The film Celebrating Life in Union will be shown 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 16, in Wilson Auditorium. The Emmy-nominated film was directed by Gladys Bensimon. The film follows a group of former Cuban political prisoners through their memory of imprisonment and their half-century fight against the aging Castro regime. Having developed a strong community that now crosses three generations, they struggle with the realization that their own mortality may come before they can return to their homeland. The director will speak at the conclusion of the film. Event sponsored by the Human Relations Advisory Council (HRAC) and the Office of Student Activities.
The Monmouth University Library has books, films, and other educational materials related to Hispanic Heritage Month. Visitors are invited to stop by through Oct. 15 to see the display.
