Monmouth University’s Student Activities Board and the Center for the Arts are sponsoring the Puzzle Project, a collaborative group art exhibition to raise money for autism awareness. Participants are invited to purchase a 24 x 24- inch universal puzzle piece which they can then turn it into a unique work of art. When the piece is completed they can bring it back to the Pollak Theatre Gallery where it will be inserted into the puzzle. The installation will continue to grow over the course of the exhibition. The university’s puzzle will eventually be added to over 5,000 other pieces for an exhibition in New York City.
The Puzzle Project was initially sponsored by the Monmouth County Arts Council and was created and developed by the artists Tim Kelly & Sandy Taylor and Marie Maber for the 2009 Teen Arts Festival at Brookdale Community College. Since then, the project has grown exponentially and puzzle pieces have been made in 15 states, and eight countries on three continents. Tim Kelly who continues to coordinate and maintain the Puzzle Project explains that, “participants can tell any story they want on their puzzle piece. It can be a painting, drawing, collage, words, mixed media, fabric…anything. Anyone can participate. The goal of each piece isn’t just to say something, but to say something meaningful to you.”
Puzzle pieces are $10 and can be purchased and picked-up at the Pollak Theatre Box Office. All proceeds from the Monmouth University Puzzle Project will go towards autism awareness. The exhibition will run through November 23. The Pollak Theatre Gallery is open Monday – Friday, 9 a.m. – 7 p.m.
