John F. Moses, 87, of Tinton Falls, formerly of Red Bank, entered eternal life on Tuesday, September 1 at Riverview Medical Center surrounded by family. John was born in Cheraw, S.C., to Wilbert Marion and Annie (Tobias) Moses and was raised in Port Washington, N.Y. John attended SUNY Oneonta and then transferred to and graduated from SUNY at Oswego earning a bachelor of science in industrial arts education. He later earned a master’s degree in education from Kean University.

John arrived in Red Bank in 1952 and became the first African-American secondary school teacher in Monmouth County. His passion as a member of the Juvenile Conference Committee fueled his tireless involvement with Our Father’s Persistent Love Jail Ministry where he counseled inmates and spread the gospel of Jesus Christ.

He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Asbury Park where he also served as a deacon and head usher. Mr. Moses was a longtime educator and acted as a mentor to many of his students. He retired as vice principal of Red Bank Regional High School in 1991.

John was predeceased by his parents, two sisters and three brothers. He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Alma Brown Moses; his loving daughter, Cheryl Moses Cross of Red Bank; a brother, Richard Moses of Uniondale, N.Y.; his grandchildren, John Moses Cross, James Paul Brown Cross and Jael Alma Nicole Cross, all of Red Bank; and his niece, Thomasina Savage of Neptune.

Visitation was held on Friday, Sept. 4 at the Braun Funeral Home, Eatontown. A second viewing was held on Saturday, Sept. 5 followed by a funeral service at First Baptist Church of Asbury Park. Burial was private at Monmouth Memorial Park, Neptune. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in John’s memory to Our Fathers Persistent Love, P.O.
