MIDDLETOWN TOWNSHIP –Monday’s NJSIAA first round North Jersey Section 2, Group 3 field hockey tournament game between host Middletown North and Hightstown began as if it would be an easy win for the Lady Lions with North going up, 3-0, but there were a few anxious moments before North took a 3-1 victory.
“We did start out well,” North coach Colleen Weimer said. “We carried that momentum into the second half, but we slowed down a bit. However, we won the game and I’m happy with that.”
North got off to a quick start when Eden Edelson scored on a penalty stroke, and then senior Brittany Sharkey followed with a pair of goals, accounting for all of North’s scoring.
“That was the first time that I scored two goals in a varsity game,” Sharkey said. ”They were only my second and third goals of the season.”
“Her other goal came against Shore Regional in our opening game,” Weimer said. “We’re only 7-10, but we’ve won three of our last four games and we are definitely playing better right now.”

“My first goal came after I got a pass from Christine Gebhardt and I put it into the middle of the goal,” Sharkey said. “On my second goal, I got a pass from Hailee Hallard in front of the goal and hit it into the corner.”

After being held to just one shot on goal in the first half, Hightstown played much better in the second half, and scored on a goal by Victoria Ewanis midway through the half.
The Rams also had two other good shots along with four penalty corners, but couldn’t convert.
North, which was seeded eighth in the tournament, was scheduled to face top-seeded Mendham on Thursday, after press time.
