COLTS NECK – Thanks to an agreement between the Navy, Monmouth County School Administration, and the Freehold Regional School District, 15 high school-age children from the Naval Weapons Station (NWS Earle) will transition from Monmouth Regional High School, Tinton Falls, to Colts Neck High School as of September 2016.
“This is great news for Earle’s children,” said NWS Earle commanding officer Capt. Jay Steingold. “We want to sincerely thank the Monmouth County School Administration, and the Freehold Regional School District leadership for their outstanding support.”
“Our sailors regularly interact with our neighbors in Colts Neck,” said Steingold. “Having them educated in that same community only serves to strengthen that bond.”
The main side of the Earle complex is located in Colts Neck, and according to public relations liaison William Addison, the residents there patronize many of the local businesses. Many also attend worship services, and participate in youth sports in the township.
The change would shorten commute times to school and provide access to additional programs, such as the Navy’s Jr. Reserve Officer Training Corps. Freehold Regional High School Superintendent Charles Sampson noted, “The Freehold Regional High School District will be happy to welcome the students from Naval Weapons Station Earle to Colts Neck High School this fall. The transition process is being finalized. Building administrators will create a smooth transition for the students, ensuring they are able to continue pursuing their individual academic goals.”
This change only affects high school-aged students. The Navy’s K-8 students will continue to attend classes in Tinton Falls. Information about the size of future classes was not available for release.
