William F. Philburn Jr. passed away on March 2. He was born in Irvington in 1923 to William F. Philburn Sr. and Louise. He lived in Belmar, graduated from St. Rose High School, was a proud veteran of the US Navy and a Seton Hall graduate, class of 1948.

William was an avid alumni supporter and devoted Pirates Men’s basketball fan.

He was an active member of St. James Catholic Church, Red Bank, and sang in the church choir, was an usher and Eucharistic Minister. William was a member of the Diocese of Trenton church choir and volunteered for numerous church activities. He was an active member of the Knights of Columbus. He was also a volunteer at several local organizations such as ARC, Meals on Wheels, The Barn and annual Knights of Columbus corned beef and cabbage dinners. William was a Boy Scout troop leader and volunteered at Forestburg Scout Reservation, New York. He was a generous donator to charities such as Mercy Home for Boys & Girls, Boys Town and the St. Labre Indian School in Montana.

William worked at Sancor, US Steel, Esso, Hess Oil, Metropolitan Life and the Monmouth County Park System. His biggest joys were his family and friends and singing and dancing with the love of his life, Marion, who predeceased him in 2015.

William is survived by his brother, Robert of Maryland; his sister Kathleen Bushka of Connecticut; a son, Thomas Philburn and Patti; his daughters, Laura Krug and Tony and Helen Philburn Irwin and Rick; five granddaughters, Amanda and Bill Walsh, Allison Krug, Tina Philburn, Jessica Krug and Lauren Krug; a one-year-old great-grandson, Owen William; and numerous nieces, nephews and extended family members.

His spirituality, positive nature and optimistic view on life gave him the strength to endure and inspire everyone he came in contact with.

Thompson Memorial Home, Red Bank, was in charge of arrangements.
