SANDY HOOK — The Fort Hancock building used by Sandy Hook Park’s police is getting a little work done to it.
Peter McCarthy, coordinator of Gateway National Recreational Area at Sandy Hook, said the building is getting some masonry and roof work done to it before the winter’s severe weather sets in.
The building is located at the federal park’s historic Fort Hancock, a former military installation overlooking the Sandy Hook Bay and in close proximity to New York Harbor. This building dates back to the circa-1898, and had been used in the past as a warehouse/storage facility, according to McCarthy.
In the mid-1990s the structure had undergone a major overhaul and was then adapted for use as the park’s resource and law enforcement building and “It effectively operates as the police station,” for the park and its law enforcement contingent,” he said.
“It’s nothing significant,” McCarthy said of the work. “This is kind of a cyclical maintenance job.”
The project is budgeted at $439,800, he said.
