HOLMDEL – Eight Bayshore Community Hospital team members, either pursing baccalaureate distinction in nursing or interested in pursuing a career in the nursing field, were recently awarded 2012 Harry M. Poppick, M.D., Memorial Scholarships.
This year marks the 22nd year the Poppick family has supported nursing at Bayshore Community Hospital.
The scholarships are named for the late Dr. Poppick, a founding member of the Bayshore Community Hospital medical staff and former Keyport physician, who was a much respected and beloved member of the hospital family.
After his passing in 1990, the Poppick family established a nursing scholarship in his honor that has been awarded annually to members of the hospital staff who are enrolled in nursing programs or interested in pursuing a career in the nursing field.
This year’s Harry M. Poppick Scholarship recipients are: Nathan Barkley, nurse manager of OR; Kathleen Belko, nurse educator; Jennifer Barbieri, RN, 3 North; Donna Cassidy, RN, 4 East; Jennifer Lovey, assistant nurse manager of radiology; Denise Schwartz, nurse manager, 2 North; Patricia Weiss, clinical educator of OR; and Melissa Hill, administrative coordinator.
The scholarship recipients were presented with their awards during a special reception at the hospital. The ceremony began with a welcome by Timothy J. Hogan, regional president of Bayshore Community Hospital and Riverview Medical Center. The awards were presented by Linda Walsh, vice president of nursing at Bayshore Community Hospital.
“We know that the nurses at Bayshore Community Hospital are among the top in New Jersey and throughout the U.S.,” Hogan said. “The nurses honored with these scholarships are truly deserving of special recognition for the incredible work they do each and every day. We applaud their ongoing support, expertise, and devotion to the nursing profession and those who they care for.”
Poppick and his wife, Ruth, were a major force behind the development of Bayshore Community Hospital. During his tenure, he served as president of the hospital’s medical staff and as a member of the hospital’s board of trustees. He was named Bayshore’s “Most Distinguished Physician” in 1987, the year of his retirement. He practiced medicine in Keyport for 35 years. Poppick was esteemed by his associates and admired by all who knew him. His love of medicine and respect for education were legendary.
