RUMSON – March Madness will kick off early this year as hundreds of players, spectators and volunteers converge on the Rumson Country Day School’s hardwood to compete in the Hoops for Horizons 3-on-3 Basketball Tournament, a benefit for the Horizons Student Enrichment Program. Set for Friday, March 9 and Saturday, March 10, the event is open to the community with teams participating from across Monmouth County. The fun begins at 3:30 p.m. on Friday afternoon with the 5th grade division, followed by the high school/adults under 40 bracket in the early evening. The tournament will conclude the next day with the middle school and adult 40+ divisions. There will be chance auctions, a bake sale and snacks for purchase. All money raised will benefit Horizons’ 2012 summer program and the 100+ local students who attend.
Horizons is an award-winning academic and recreational summer enrichment program whose mission is to promote the potential of children primarily from Red Bank, NJ, in grades K – 8, who are living in low income circumstances. The Horizons program emphasizes math, reading and science education, the arts, intramural sports and swimming, nutritious meals, as well as social growth. Horizons is committed to the development of the whole child through experiences that enhance self-esteem, foster awareness of community responsibility, build problem solving skills and encourage a life-long interest in learning.
Paul Campanella, athletics director for Rumson Country Day School and tournament coordinator for Hoops for Horizons, said, “We ask that the public join us as players or spectators. It’s a great way to have fun, get some exercise and score for a wonderful local cause.”
