RED BANK — The next planning board meeting, scheduled for Monday, June 17, will feature be the return of a proposal to construct a 76-room, six-story Hampton Inn hotel on Rector Place and state Highway 35.
The hotel application was controversial when first proposed more than two years ago and was opposed by a borough resident, who raised concern over its size and its location in a predominately residential area, and owners of a Tinton Falls hotel. The resident and hotel owners filed suit to try and block the application.
The application was debated by members of the planning board and zoning board of adjustment about which was the appropriate body to hear the application. Ultimately, the developer withdrew the plan to retool it.
The proposed location on the southbound highway and fronting on the banks of the Swimming River has long been vacant and previously was the site of a gas station.
The planning board will meet 7 p.m. Monday at borough hall, 90 Monmouth St.
