RFH Social Justice Club Raises Awareness

RUMSON – Denim was the suggested dress code of the day April 25 at Rumson-Fair Haven Regional High School.
The RFH “Wear That You Care” initiative, also known as “Denim Day,” was undertaken in support of the local nonprofit organization 180: Turning Lives Around. Participants were invited to wear jeans as well as make a monetary donation in any amount to the organization, which is dedicated to assisting victims of domestic abuse and sexual violence.
Students and faculty were encouraged to “Wear That You Care” by the RFH Social Justice Club, whose members are dedicated to publicizing injustices taking place around the globe and providing support for victims.
“It was so great to see everyone dressed casually for a cause,” said Social Justice Club President Sonia de los Reyes.
Denim Day was initiated as part of an international protest in reaction to an Italian Supreme Court’s 1988 decision to overturn a rape conviction. Part of the court’s rationale in overturning the conviction was the fact that the victim was wearing tight-fitting jeans at the time of the attack.
Social Justice Club members and their advisor, English teacher Erin Burke, spent the weeks leading up to “Wear That You Care” promoting awareness through the use of flyers, school-wide announcements, an email sent to the student body, and information cards placed on tables in the school cafeteria.
As a result of their efforts, $250 was raised to benefit 180: Turning Lives Around.
