RED BANK – No matter the state of your bones, joints and muscles, dancing stands as one of the best exercises to get muscle tone, boost energy, and increase flexibility for seniors. In addition to being fun, it offers a range of benefits – physical, mental, and social.
“Dancing is a fun way to exercise, and it can offer many health benefits for people of any age,” says Anthony Costa, M.D., board certified orthopedic surgeon affiliated with Riverview Medical Center. “Besides being a good form of exercise and having a truly positive impact on our health, with minimal impact on our joints, a recent study actually showed that it also makes us smarter by remembering the dance steps, thus exercising the brain.”
Costa and the Total Joint Center at Riverview will be hosting its first This Joint is Jumpin’ jazz brunch and dance from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, March 2, in the Joan and Robert Rechnitz Conference and Education Center at Riverview Medical Center.
The U.S. National Institutes of Health says the health benefits of dancing could include: better muscle tone, improved flexibility, improved heart strength, and improved lung function. The benefits of dancing go well beyond heart health and physical fitness. Dancing, especially group dance activities, provides opportunities for seniors to be socially and mentally engaged, as well.
The Saturday event will feature live jazz and swing music, brunch, and dance instruction from Fred Astaire Dance Studio in Red Bank. Nationally ranked owners, Christina Penatello and Ken Hansen, will be performing alongside their students.
The jazz brunch is free but registration is required and may be made by calling 800-560-9990 or visiting www.RiverviewMedicalCenter.com/ThisJointisJumpin.
