RUMSON – It’s been a truly memorable season for the Rumson Country Day School football team.
The football season kicked into high gear – literally – at the inaugural homecoming celebration on Sept. 28. The team’s first game ended in a 16-8 victory over Mater Dei Prep that proved to be a foreshadowing of things to come as it was the first win in what turned out to be an undefeated season.
The memorable 7-0 undefeated season ended in an exciting 22-14 win against Pingry in the last minute of the game.
The football roster had 33 players, led by 14 eighth-graders who played with great school spirit and teamwork on both the offensive and defensive side of the ball.
“I am very proud of the team and the way it improved from the first practice to the last game,” said coach Paul Campanella, who is also the RCDS athletic director. “I am very proud of the eighth-graders leadership and hard work this year.  They finished with a great and exciting last game that was due to all their hard work. I know that they will remember this for a long time.
“Success is measured by camaraderie, friendship and tradition. If athletes do their best and work hard to improve, their experiences at RCDS will stay with them long after they graduate. Many of our former athletes come back to support their fellow Gators – once a Gator, always a Gator – and, to me, this is a true benchmark of success,” Campanella said.
