SEA BRIGHT – On Tuesday, Feb. 20, Sea Bright Mayor Dina Long issued her first proclamation of 2012, which recognizes Friday, March 2 as Read Across America Day.
Established by the National Education Association (or NEA), the first Read Across America Day was held on March 2nd, 1998, to help inspire a love of reading in children. The NEA chose March 2nd, the birthday of Dr. Seuss, to honor the beloved author and his work to encourage literacy among children.
Mayor Long announced that the town government is coordinating with the Sea Bright Library to put on a book give-away on March 2nd. On that Friday, Long said, “patrons will be able to go into the library and choose from an assortment of free books.”
Sea Bright has taken further steps to foster reading and creativity among children. Every Wednesday from 3:45 p.m. to 4:30 p.m., the Sea Bright Library hosts a program for schoolchildren from kindergarten to fourth grade. “The program incorporates reading and cultural exercises… it’s becoming increasingly popular,” said Councilwoman Peggy Bills.
