EATONTOWN – The public will have an opportunity next Thursday to offer its views on a proposed liquefied natural gas facility off the coast of Long Branch.
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineer hearing is planned for 6 p.m.-8 p.m. Jan. 8 at the Eatontown Sheraton, 6 Industrial Way and state Highway 35. An open house will be available from 4:30 p.m.-5 p.m.
The hearing is for input into the planned Port Ambrose liquefied natural gas (LNG) deep water pipe line facility being sought by Liberty Natural Gas, Jersey City.
Liberty Natural Gas is currently seeking approval of the U.S. Maritime Administration to construct and operate the facility that would be capable of transporting 400 million cubic feet of natural gas a day.
A coalition of 129 environmental advocacy organization have mounted opposition to the proposal, arguing the facility would be detrimental and dangerous for the environment and public.
“Building a LNG facility off of the Jersey Shore is a clear and present danger,” Doug Malley, director of Environment New Jersey.
Gov. Chris Christie vetoed plans for a similar Liberty Natural Gas project in 2011.
This will be the only forum in New Jersey for the public to offer comment during the 60-day public comment period before the maritime association renders its decision.
