St. John Vianney Partners with Brookdale CC to Offer College Credits
HOLMDEL – Saint John Vianney High School (SJVHS) is partnering with Brookdale Community College to offer students an opportunity to gain college credits.
SJVHS has developed a program called the Early College Academy (ECA) which will allow students enrolled in the program to graduate with an associate’s degree in social science from Brookdale when they graduate from SJVHS.
The program was designed to give students an advantage in gaining college credits and experience a more challenging academic schedule. When a student completes an associate degree, all 60 credits will transfer to all New Jersey state colleges and universities. Transferrable credits to out-of-state colleges will be determined by each school’s transfer policy.
If the student continues to their bachelor’s degree in a similar field, participating in the program can cut down their college time by up to two years and significantly reduce the cost of college tuition. If a student changes his or her degree program upon transfer, credits earned through Brookdale will be transferrable based on the college or universities transfer policy.
Students in the ECA will attend SJVHS for all of their classes until their senior year. They then will take a combination of classes on Brookdale’s campus as well as at SJVHS.
Each class, offered through the ECA, will be taught by an adjunct professor who holds a master’s degree in their discipline. Only 25 students will be accepted into the ECA each year.
“This is a great opportunity to work with Brookdale and a chance to challenge our students even more. Students will get to experience college courses starting their freshman year of high school which will give them an advantage over other high school students,” said Principal Steven DiMezza.
Officials from Saint John Vianney High School and Brookdale Community College were expected to sign an agreement on Thursday, March 20, for the ECA Program.
The program will kick off in September 2014 with the incoming freshman class.
