Although it was a gloomy day at the shore, there was a friendly atmosphere at Sea Bright Borough’s reorganization meeting Jan. 6.

The borough hall was packed for Oceanport’s reorganization meeting as officials were sworn in, honors were doled out, and a new mayor took his seat on the dais.

It was a celebration of old and new milestones as the township committee forged ahead into the new year at its annual reorganization meeting in a packed courtroom Sunday, Jan. 7.

The transition to a new year following the November election was seamless as three key borough officials returned to their former posts.

This year’s reorganization meeting featured returning faces on the dais, the election of a new council president and an exciting project update.

On a stormy evening, just as Gov. Phil Murphy announced a state of emergency in anticipation of heavy rains, severe flooding and high winds, former Assembly member Kim Eulner was named mayor of Shrewsbury at the borough council’s regular meeting. She is the 20th mayor and only the third woman to lead the borough in its history.

Small-town politics, while contentious at times, can be as seemingly wholesome as a breath of fresh air. In large cities, the swearing-in of council members and mayors is performed under strict decorum and with the coldness of efficiency. In Atlantic Highlands, as in other boroughs and towns on the Bayshore, Reorganization Day is a day for the community to celebrate with the families of those elected and often other state and local officials.

The underlying theme of Highlands’ first town meeting of the year was positivity as two returning council members were sworn in, first responders took their oaths of office and Mayor Carolyn Broullon highlighted the borough’s 2023 achievements as well as what’s to come.

The borough’s reorganization meeting was short and bittersweet as new council members were sworn in while the retirement of a key borough employee was announced.

The borough council unwrapped its outlook for 2024 and reflected on the last six months as it transitioned into a new form of government.
