A proposed plan could splash some life into the former Port Monmouth Elementary School. The school, shuttered in 2020, is being evaluated by the Monmouth County Park System (MCPS) as a potential public aquatic center.

Amidst grumbling from some property owners, the planning board unanimously voted to accept and forward Route 36 redevelopment study to the township committee.

The redevelopment study undertaken by the township to transform the Route 36 corridor in Middletown is making steady progress. After a public presentation in March on the process, Stan Slachetka, principal planner with T&M Associates, returned with a PowerPoint presentation for the first in a series of three special planning board meetings to review properties that qualify as areas in need of redevelopment.

The township’s ambitious plan to revive the history and economic vitality of Route 36 has gained momentum. More than a hundred residents and business owners participated in the first community meeting organized by township officials to discuss redevelopment of Middletown’s section of the state corridor.

ATLANTIC HIGHLANDS – A unanimous decision by the borough planning board has cleared a path for Starbucks to bring the first of its cafés to the Bayshore’s Route 36 corridor.

“So this has been an issue ongoing for Highlands for many years,” said Gonzales. “Their storm system is not up to par. If it was a municipality taking care of it, they’d have to do improvements.”

A longstanding vision for the township’s Route 36 corridor is headed to the planning board for further investigation.
