ATLANTIC HIGHLANDS
The Atlantic Highlands First Aid and Safety Squad (AHFAS) is sponsoring a community blood drive Monday, July 21, in honor of local resident, Sue Curry.
The event is being held in coordination with the Central Jersey Blood Center and will take place from 3 to 8 p.m. at the Atlantic Highlands Emergency Services Building at 10 E. Highland Ave.
“Sue Curry is the wife of AHFAS life member Walter Curry, and her need for blood following a recent illness raised our own awareness for the urgent need for blood donors locally,” AHFAS Chief Jerry Pandolfo said. “Sue was helped by the generosity of others. We all felt it was important for those of us in the squad and the community to give back.”
The squad has set a goal to collect at least 30 pints of blood during the event, but would like to do even more.
“This is a great way to possibly help save a life,” Pandolfo said. “Bring a friend.”
Participating in the blood drive is simple and takes just a short time. Donors need to be 17 years old or older and weigh at least 120 pounds. Those participating are required to bring a signature ID and it is suggested they drink lots of water during the day leading up to the event.

The AHFAS is an all-volunteer organization that responds to emergency medical and rescue emergencies in the community and occasionally the surrounding areas. The squad operates on donations from the borough and the community.
“There is a critical need for blood donations,” Pandolfo said. “According to the folks at the Central Jersey Blood Center, every 2 seconds someone in the country needs blood that comes from donors. As an organization that survives only on donations and volunteers, all of us at the AHFAS understand the need to help out. We urge members of the community to call Beverly Glynn today to sign up to donate and help their fellow residents.”

RED BANK
Transition Monmouth will host a screening of “Transition 2.0” at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, July 31, in the community room of the Red Bank Public Library, 84 W. Front St.
The film surveys worldwide grassroots responses to the effects of climate change – with efforts toward localizing food, energy and other needs, as well as addressing the psychology of change.
A discussion will be held afterward about how the transition movement is taking root in Monmouth County.

MONMOUTH COUNTY
The Monmouth County Federation of Republican Women is having its summer wine and cheese party from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 20, at an oceanfront home in Spring Lake. Many of the elected officials will be there with updates on their official activities and campaigns.
