Anthony P. Mercantante, Middletown township administrator, right, receives a state resolution and local proclamation from State Assemblywoman Amy Handlin and Mayor Gerard P. Scharfenberger. Mercantante was recognized for his leadership in the aftermath of Super Storm Sandy. The township committee proclaimed July 15 as Anthony P. Mercantante Day to honor him for his selfless service. Mercantante, who suffered personal losses as the result of the storm, slept in his office and spent 12 days at the emergency operations center at town hall to manage the endless stream of problems that arose following the historic storm.
