Benjamin Franklin, played by Sal Giacchi, a retired ad executive from Monmouth Beach (left), and John Adams, portrayed by Greg Schweers, a Sea Bright lawyer, attempt to convince Congress to vote for independence in the play 1776. The show, which ended its run at the Spring Lake Theatre May 13, featured a mix of dialogue and musical numbers about the events surrounding the signing of the Declaration of Independence.
Schweers, who is a familiar face to the theater and an American history buff, said the musical is one of his favorites. “[John] Adams spends a substantial amount of time on stage,” Schweers said. “I really enjoyed the part. Adams goes from dealing with Congress to singing to his wife Abigail to dealing with George Washington then dancing with Mary and George Washington… I had a great time.” Schweers said the play was well received by audience members.
