White to Speak About War of 1812 Ships
MONMOUTH BEACH – Award-winning historian and novelist, William H. White, will be speaking Friday, June 6, about “American Sailing Ships in The War of 1812” at The Monmouth Beach Cultural Center.
The Board of Directors of The Monmouth County English-Speaking Union is inviting interested members of the public to join them at 6 p.m. at the cultural center at 128 Ocean Ave. for a social hour of cocktails and hors d’oeuvres, followed by a speech by White, who is a Rumson resident.
White, an avid lifelong sailor and racer in local waters and around the world, served as an officer in the U.S. Navy in the 1960s and was actively involved in naval operations in Vietnam. He also received training on square rig ships, gaining knowledge and experience which aided him in the composing of his popular historical fiction trilogy on The War of 1812 – “A Press of Canvas,” “A Fine Tops’l Breeze” and “The Evening Gun.”
White is a recognized authority on maritime battles of The War of 1812. He was commissioned by the U.S. Navy and The National Maritime Historical Society to write a guide to the war and its bicentennial celebration 2012-2015. His speaking venues have included The USS Constitution Museum in Boston; The Peabody Essex Museum in Salem Mass.; the Museum of the Atlantic in Halifax, Nova Scotia; India House in New York City; SUNY Maritime College; and The Fall War of 1812 Symposium in Baltimore, Md.
Admission is $35 for members and $40 for guests.
