TINTON FALLS – A Keyport borough councilman, scheduled to be sworn in for a new term on Jan. 1, was killed in a two-car crash on New Year’s Eve afternoon.
Clemente Toglia, 53, was killed when his vehicle struck an oncoming vehicle head-on on Shrewsbury Avenue at about 3:30 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 31, according to Police Lt. David Scrivanic of the traffic safety unit.
Toglia was traveling northbound on Shrewsbury Avenue, when his vehicle crossed over to the southbound lane, just north of the Sycamore Avenue intersection, and collided with an oncoming vehicle in the road’s fast lane, Scrivanic said.
The other vehicle was driven by Bunce Atkinson, 64, of Little Silver. Toglia was taken to Riverview Medical Center, Red Bank, where he was pronounced dead. Atkinson also was transported to the medical center for a hand injury.
The cause of the collision is still under investigation, Scrivanic said. He asked anyone with any information to contact police Cpl. Joseph LoPresti at 732-542-3400, ext. 621.
Toglia, an incumbent Republican, won re-election in November. He owned and operated Dominion Financial Group, Ltd., a firm specializing in financial and insurance consulting, according to the Keyport Republican Club’s website.
