Ann Margaret (Greany) Askin died suddenly but peacefully July 19 at home. Born in Hoboken to Joseph and Ann (Salmon) Greany, who predeceased her, Ann grew up in Holmdel. She attended St. Mary’s Grammar School and was a proud member of Mater Dei High School’s Class of 1967.
In 1968, Ann eloped with her high school sweetheart John Askin, and from that day on she devoted her life to him – and he to her – for 50 wonderful years. They lived in Middletown where they raised their three children before moving to Farmingdale 13 years ago.
Ann’s highest calling was to be a devoted wife, mother and grandmother, as well as a loving sister, aunt, cousin and friend. Her attention to details was evident in her attire, her event planning, her gift giving and the many little acts of kindness she performed for family and friends over the years. Like her mother and namesake, she exuded elegance and grace. No doubt these attributes are what helped her land the coveted title “Peach Queen,” a much talked about highlight of her youth.
Ann was a communicant of St. Catherine’s Roman Catholic Church in Farmingdale. Over the years, she lent her unique talents to many organizations, including serving as former PTA president of St. Mary School and Mater Dei High School, volunteering at Riverview Medical Center, fundraising at 180 Turning Lives Around, Keyport and, most recently, for the Friends of the Monmouth Museum, for whom she was a valued board member and fundraiser.
In addition to her husband John, she leaves behind her adoring children: Mariellen (Dennis) Raucher, Mount Vernon, Missouri; John (Kim) Askin, Howell; and Beth Ann (Billy) Watkins, Oceanport; her 10 grandchildren Kelsie, Meghan, Ryan and Sean Raucher, John, Molly and Brian Askin, Liam, Finn and Jack Watkins; her sister Marijane Bruncati, Middletown; and three brothers Joseph Greany, Fort Collins, Colorado; Thomas Greany, Jackson; and William Greany, Bristol, Virginia.
Friends called July 23 at John F. Pfleger Funeral Home, Middletown. A Mass of Christian burial was offered at St. Mary’s Chapel, New Monmouth, July 24. Interment was at Mount Olivet Cemetery.
