Norman D. Hungerford, 79, passed away Aug. 31 in Freehold. His passing was unexpected but peaceful. Norman was born June 13, 1939 to Elmer and Vera (Collier) Hungerford in Oneonta, New York. He was a retired captain of the United States Army. Norman received a B.S. in forestry from Syracuse University, an M.S. in forestry from the University of Michigan and his Ph.D. in forestry and environmental science from Syracuse University and New York State College of Forestry.

Norman was a trustee of the Monmouth County Historical Association of New Jersey for over 10 years. He served as chair of the MCHA Grounds committee helping to preserve the local historic landscape architecture, work that brought him so much joy. Norman lent his professional expertise and assistance to many other charitable organizations throughout Monmouth County. The Visiting Nurse Association (VNA) of Central New Jersey and its show house events, the Quaker Meeting House, the Borough of Shrewsbury, the Shrewsbury Garden Club, the Monmouth Reform Temple, Rumson Country Day School and Oasis are just a few of the beneficiaries of his expertise, services and generosity over the past 25 years.

In 2016 Norman was honored by the Monmouth County Historical Association at its Garden Party. At that time, he received numerous proclamations. For the Congressional Record, he was thanked in both the House of Representatives and the State Senate for his meritorious record of service and commitment to MCHA, Monmouth County and the state. And the Monmouth County Freeholders proclaimed June 26 “Dr. Norman Hungerford Day.”

Norman will be lovingly remembered by his three daughters and seven grandchildren: Kristine Ling (predeceased husband Ronald) and children Ryan and Brenna; Karen Dundas (Michael) and children Christopher, Cameron and Nicholas; and Kim Meyer (Jeff) and children Gabrielle and George; and his dear friend, Kay Smith.

Visitation and Funeral Services will be held Sept. 6 with visitation between 2 and 4 p.m. and 6 and 8 p.m. and a Funeral Service at 7:30 p.m. at Higgins Memorial Home, 20 Center St., Freehold, NJ 07728. A graveside burial service will take place at 1 p.m. Sept. 7 at Glenwood Cemetery in Oneonta, New York.
