TRENTON — An Ocean Township cardiologist has been indicted for allegedly defrauding more than $52,000 from insurance companies for services that authorities charge he couldn’t have performed because he was out of the country at the time.
A Mercer County grand jury last week has charged Ahmad Mossavi, aka Seyed A. Mossavizadeh, 52, who resides in the Wayside section of Ocean, with 48 counts of second-degree health-care claims fraud and one count of third-degree theft by deception, according to the state Office of the Attorney General.
Mossavi maintained two offices, one in Ocean and the other in South Plainfield, and according to the indictment, between January 2008 through October 2009, he submitted or caused to be submitted claims to Aetna, GIGNA Horizon Blue Cross Blue Shield and QualCare, among other insurance companies, totally $52,717, for patient care he allegedly never provided. Authorities said the dates of the services correspond to times when Mossavi was out of the country or otherwise not treating patients.
The state Board of Medical Examiners suspended Mossavi’s medical license on Spet. 23, 2011, according to the Attorney General’s Office
A conviction of a second-degree crime carries with it a maximum penalty of 10 years in state prison and a fine up to $150,000; third-degree crimes have as its maximum penalty a five-year sentence and fine up to $15,000, according to the Attorney General’s Office.
