WEST LONG BRANCH – Bishop David M. O’Connell will speak at a Religion in Public Life symposium at 10 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 6, at Monmouth University.
Hosted by the university Department of Philosophy, Religion, and Interdisciplinary Studies (PRIS), the symposium will also feature a presentation by Susan Abraham, assistant professor of theological studies in Loyola Marymount University, Los Angeles.
Sponsored by Monmouth University’s School of Humanities and Social Sciences and the Office of Global Initiatives, the symposium is the beginning of a new initiative intended to raise awareness of the liberal arts, specifically Monmouth University’s PRIS department.
O’Connell, who is the bishop of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Trenton, will offer a general reflection on the impact and significance of Pope Francis’ papacy for global and American Catholicism from an ecclesiastical perspective while Abraham will offer a reflection on the same from a scholarly perspective.
Talks will also be given by Golam Mathborm, chairman of the PRIS Department, and Laura Moriarty, Ph.D., the new provost at Monmouth University.
Future symposiums to be hosted by the PRIS Department will focus on morality and ethics and other religions.
The symposium will be held in the Wilson Hall Auditorium.  O’Connell will speak from 10 to 11:30 a.m. and Abraham will speak from 2:30 to 4 p.m.
