A free, festive performance of Chinese art, dance and culture will be held at Holmdel High School on Saturday, at 1:30 p.m. It is the annual show by the Jersey Shore Chinese School, performed for the community.
The annual celebration features the 150 students and adults from the culture arts school, which holds classes on the Holmdel High School campus on Saturdays. The highly-polished cultural showcase features performers wearing brightly colored costumes. The students perform ancient dances, display martial arts, play music on traditional instruments, and even tell the occasional joke in Chinese. The highlight is the Lion Dance. Hundreds attend.

This year, the Chinese are celebrating The Year of the Sheep. “The sheep represents peace to us, so we’re hoping this will be a year of peacefulness, because peace brings happiness,” said Principal Chimin Hu. Chinese New Year is also a harbinger of spring, so that is also a reason to celebrate. “We know its been a cold winter, but we know spring is now coming,” said Hu.
February 19 is the start of Chinese New Year. On Thursday, 25 JSCS students gave a free performance at Red Bank Regional High School.
