WEST LONG BRANCH – Although losing many key seniors from last year’s 10-2 B Division Central champions, Shore Regional coach Mark Costantino looks forward to another successful season.
Costantino expects the Blue Devils to once again be a division and New Jersey Interscholastic Athletic Association (NJSIAA) Central Jersey Group I playoff contender.
“We should be pretty good again,” the coach said. “We played Bloomfield and Passaic Valley in our first scrimmage Friday and did well. Our kicking game and defense looks good.”
Shore went 10-2 last year, defeating Point Pleasant Beach, 31-0, to win the division title but lost to the Garnet Gulls in the CJ Group I finals.
Shore will run out of its usual Delaware Wing T with fullback Doug Goldsmith expected to play a big role on offense.
“He rushed for over 700 yards last season,” Costantino said. “He will be the focus of our running game.”
Replacing last year’s starting quarterback, Matt Muh, will be Ryan Campi, who looks impressive in the pre-season.
“He’s played very well in practice,” Costantino said. “He is also a decent passer.”
Mike Moore, Kyle Masica and Chris Johnsen will share time at the halfback position with Cole Barrale and Matt Pennell as wide receivers.
Connor Rempel starts at tight end with James Bedell and Eric Graham returning at guard. Steve Fiumefreddo and Rob Kondracki are the starters at tackle with Casey Rogers at center.
Defensively, Jeremy Redaelli, whose older brother played at Red Bank Catholic last year, and Mitch Candido are the tentative starters at defensive end tackle will be Dom Liana and Alex Caruso.
Goldsmith, Devon McLaughlin and Bedell will be the inside linebackers while Johnson, Campi and Connor Rempel play outside linebacker.
Matt Pennell will be at free safety with Jack Britton, Mike Moore and Tyreek McCain starting at cornerback.
Jack Monterio and handle both the kicking and punting duties.
“He’s been outstanding in practice,” Costantino said. “He can kick well from 50 yards away.
Shore opens its season Saturday, Sept. 13, with a big B Central game at Keyport. The big game however, will be Oct. 31 when the Blue Devils play host to Point Beach.
“We won the sectional title in 2012, “ Costantino said. ”We’ve been in the finals three of the last four years and hope to make it again.”
