HOLMDEL—With new head coach Jay Graham at the helm this season, the Holmdel football team will be looking to improve upon last year’s 3-7 record.
“There are a great group of kids on this team and the coaching staff believes in them,” Graham said. “We are just trying to create a culture here where they believe in themselves and this program.”
Battling for the starting quarterback job are senior Erik Alvino and sophomore Aneesh Agrawal.
Alvino or Agrawal will be handing the ball off to senior running back Frank Condito. Also fighting for some playing time at running back are juniors Matthew Nuzzi and Jovanny Rodriguez.
The top wide receiver for the Hornets should be senior Adam Ibrahim.
“Adam is an athletic player who hustles every time he is on the field,” Graham said.
Alvino or Agrawal will have another good target to throw to in senior tight end Kyle Rooney.
“Kyle leads by example and is one of the hardest working players on the team,” Graham said.
The offensive line will be led by seniors Matt McDonnell and Ryan Nolan.
“McDonnell is a strong kid who has a lot of potential and Ryan is a very unselfish individual, who moved from running back to offensive lineman for the betterment of the team,” Graham said.
The spark plug for the Hornets defense will be Condito, who is an all-division player at linebacker.
“Frank is a team leader,” Graham said.
Other key returning players on defense for the Hornets are Ibrahim at defensive back, McDonnell, who started at defensive tackle last year and Nolan at linebacker.
“My outlook for the season is for us to play to our full potential and be competitive every week,” Graham said.
The Hornets will open the season at noon Saturday, Sept. 13, at Monmouth Regional.
“Monmouth Regional has some special athletes,” Graham said. “Coach Mosca does a great job coaching the kids over there and we will work hard in preparing our team to come to battle.”
