The American Littoral Society is planning a series of four Saturday lectures as part of its Lunch and Learn series beginning Dec. 6. In partnership with Langosta Lounge in Asbury Park, guests will be treated to lectures featuring topics related to protecting, restoring, preserving, and enjoying the coastal – littoral – areas.
A surf fishing clinic will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 6. Guests will meet on the boardwalk at Langosta Lounge, 1000 Ocean Ave., Asbury Park. Jeff Dement, Fish Tagging Program director of the society and avid angler will lead the clinic on the beach.  “Surf casting is a wonderful way for individuals to connect with the natural world, relax and escape,” said Dement. His goal is to give individuals the tools and skill set needed to be able to embark on their own surf casting experiences with confidence and enjoyment.
On the beach the basics of casting, knot tying, lure and bait selection, and “reading” a beach will be covered. All skill levels are welcome and rods, reels and tackle will be provided.  Children under 18 are welcome with a supervising adult. Participants are advised to dress warmly and in layers.
Following the clinic, a special lunch at Langosta Lounge will be served with a presentation by Dement on the American Littoral Society’s fish tagging program, the largest voluntary fish tagging program in the United States. Participants will learn how to become a member and aid scientists with data collected by anglers.
Guests have two options: tickets to attend the surf casting clinic, lunch and presentation are $40;  tickets for just the lunch and presentation are $25.  There is limited space in the surf casting clinic and registration is required by visiting littoralsociety.org or by calling 732-291-0055, ext. 110
Upcoming Lunch and Learn presentations at Langosta Lounge  include Oysters in the Bay on Saturday, Jan. 3; Native Plants on Saturday, Feb. 7; and Beach Grass Planting on Saturday, March 7.
