The Daughters of the American Revolution Shrewsbury Chapter presented a community service award this week to Ed Segall, who operated the Sea Gulls’ Nest restaurant and bar at Gateway National Recreation Area at Sandy Hook for nearly 50 years. “When we thought of the community service award, his was the first name that came to mind,” said Laura Cramer, the chapter’s corresponding secretary, during the chapter’s meeting, held at the Shrewsbury Historical Society, 619 Sycamore Ave. Segall received the award to honor his longstanding tradition of conducting a daily sunset service, honoring members of the military and veterans, accompanied by patriotic music in the background and ending with the Pledge of Allegiance. The Sea Gulls’ Nest was not open for business this summer, due to the damage caused by Super Storm Sandy last October.
