RED BANK โ€“ Aug. 24 marked the first Back to School Festival and backpack giveaway hosted by the House on Steven Avenue (HOSA) Fund at Pilgrim Baptist Church. Founded by Delisha Grant and Damarcus Adisa, the HOSA Fund provides enrichment, readiness and economic support for local youth and their families through various programs, continuing the work started by former residents Barbara and Roy Osborne. Approximately 600 colorful backpacks containing school supplies were available to those who had preregistered with the organization.

The festival and backpack day were the culmination of Pilgrim Baptist Churchโ€™s Summer STEAM Academy, a weeklong program for children in grades three through 12 that developed the skills in core areas of science, technology, engineering, arts and math to get students ready for the school year. Students were also exposed to social, health and wellness and career opportunity discussions designed to foster improved self-esteem and educational motivation.

Evening meals, snacks and discussions promoted healthy eating habits, an initiative supported by a generous grant from the Jon Bon Jovi Soul Foundation.
