Luke Cruz’s senior season could have been defined by an eye injury that saw the RFH big man miss 11 games. When Cruz returned to the lineup in late January, he sported a pair of goggles that saw him embody the prowess of other famous spectacled hoopsters, like Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and St. Louis University’s Robbie Avila.

MANASQUAN – The gym at Manasquan was electric with two passionate student sections, the stakes were as high as they come in Shore Conference basketball, and Rumson-Fair Haven had a score to settle.

OCEAN TOWNSHIP – Rumson-Fair Haven found itself down by 11 points at the midway point of the third quarter, staring at the end of its season. But 6-foot-9 senior Luke Cruz made sure the Bulldogs had more basketball to play.

With the Shore Conference basketball tournament wrapping up on Friday at Monmouth University, the focus will quickly shift to the winter state playoffs. The brackets are out in boys basketball, girls basketball and hockey. Best of luck to all our local teams as they chase a state championship.

SCOTTSDALE, ARIZONA – Super Bowl LX was minutes away from kickoff in California but Little Silver’s Chris Gotterup was providing quite a pregame show at the Waste Management Phoenix Open in Arizona.

The non-public brackets are out and it’s time to begin the road to MetLife Stadium. Red Bank Catholic and St. John Vianney both earned home games for the opening round.

RUMSON – Gabe Kemp’s high school career is exactly seven games old, yet the Red Bank Catholic freshman running back has a stat sheet that looks like a senior dominating the Shore Conference.

RED BANK – Red Bank Catholic’s youth movement showed it can shine brightest under pressure. Behind standout performances from freshmen quarterback Rahmir Rivera and running back Gabe Kemp, the Caseys outlasted Holmdel 29-28 in a Shore Conference showdown that lived up to its billing as a “war at the shore.”

LITTLE SILVER – Sometimes it takes a while for a first-year head coach to connect with his team and build the trust and culture that makes a winning program. At Red Bank Regional, Tyler Karalewich had the daunting task of filling the massive shoes of Shane Fallon, one of the Shore’s all-time great football coaches.
