Alfred H. Smith Sr.

Alfred H. Smith Sr., 73, of Middletown, passed away Aug. 16 at home surrounded by his family. Born in Perth Amboy, he resided in Middletown most of his life. 

Mr. Smith served in the U.S. Army as a military policeman before being honorably discharged. He was a road supervisor with Middletown Township for many years before retiring in 2009. He was past commander of VFW Post 2179 as well as District 6. In his leisure time he was an avid fisherman and enjoyed crafts, especially woodworking. His greatest joy was his family, and he will be deeply missed by those who knew and loved him. 

He was predeceased by his parents, Alfred W. and Rosemarie Smith. Surviving are his beloved wife of 43 years Deborah Smith (née Biegner) of Middletown; his children: Stacey Goodwin of Keansburg, Alfred H. Smith Jr. and his wife Karla of Texas, Valerie Perez and her husband Angel of Florida, and Kristofer Smith of Middletown; his four grandchildren: Skylar, Will, Samantha, and Damian; his brothers and their spouses: Robert Smith and Cathy of Middletown, Gary Smith and Mary of Middletown, Larry Smith and Linda of Pennsylvania, Kenneth Smith and Sherrie of Maryland, and Edward Smith and Rita of Hazlet; his sister-in-law Sharon Smith-Esteves; and his dear friends, Frank and Lori Cannon; as well as many nieces and nephews. 

Graveside services were held Aug. 19 at Shoreland Memorial Gardens in Hazlet. A memorial gathering will be held at a later date at the VFW.
