Patrick Moran, 91, of Red Bank, passed away peacefully Dec. 10, 2022. He led a full life, starting from simple beginnings to achieve great success both in his career and personal life. Patrick was born and raised in Akron, Ohio. He attended St. Vincent High School, John Carroll University, and Cleveland Marshall Law School. He was the tax director at General Tire Company in Akron, Ohio.

In 1972, a new job as the tax director of Merck & Co., Inc. brought Patrick to Rumson. The highlight of his career was when he worked with a group to help write the Tax Reform Act of 1986. In 1991, he retired and began to split his time between New Jersey and Fort Myers, Florida. Patrick was an active member of the community, culminating in his election to be a councilman in Rumson, a position he held for 10 years.

In 1956, Patrick married Ethel McBride. Theirs was a 59-year love affair. They raised four kids, traveled the world, enjoyed playing golf together, and were each other’s best friend. Ethel passed away in February 2016.

Throughout his life, Patrick’s passion was the game of golf. Starting as a kid caddying at Portage Country Club in Akron, Ohio, to his participation on the golf teams both in high school and college. In 1949, Patrick played in the U.S. Junior Amateur Championship at Congressional Country Club in Bethesda, Maryland. While living in Hudson, Ohio, he was a founding member of The Country Club of Hudson and for many years held the course record there. Patrick is a past club champion of Rumson Country Club.

Upon his retirement, Patrick became involved with several senior golf associations, including the New Jersey Seniors and the United States Seniors. He also became a USGA official, officiating at the U.S. Senior Amateur tournaments. Patrick was on the executive committee of the New Jersey State Golf Association. He continued to play completive golf way into his 80s, winning the N.J. Seniors tournament three years in a row.

Patrick is survived by his son Charles Moran of Fair Haven, his daughter Kathleen Walsh and her husband Michael of Fair Haven, his son David Moran and his wife Carmen of Holly Springs, North Caroline, and his son Edward Moran of Red Bank. He is also survived by his beloved grandchildren, Patrick Moran III and his wife Michelle; Ryan Walsh; Kevin Walsh and his fiancé Janie Wassel; Tess Moran and her husband Corey Harris; Claire Walsh; and Evan Moran and his wife Ashley. Also surviving are his sister Cecilia Dugan of Akron, Ohio, and many nieces and nephews.

A memorial gathering with a memorial Mass took place Dec. 14 at The Church of the Nativity, Fair Haven. In lieu of flowers, the family requests you donate to Covenant House at P.O. Box 758636, Topeka, KS 66675-9986 or to Rumson First Aid Squad at One Wilson Circle, Rumson, NJ 07760.
