Margaret Mary “Peg” Smith, 82, of Red Bank, passed away peacefully Nov. 30, 2024, surrounded by her loving family. She was born Feb. 2, 1942, to Margaret and Martin Maughan in Jersey City.
Peg was predeceased by her parents; her former husband John “Dick” Smith; her son Sean R. Smith; grandson Connor Smith; brothers, Peter and Kevin Maughan; and her brothers-in-law, Paul Suda and Bob Smith.
She is survived by her devoted daughter Kellie Wickersham (David), daughter-in-law Elaine Smith and grandchildren Margot and Brooks Wickersham and Sean C. Smith. Peg also leaves behind sisters, Eleanor Muench (David) and Theresa Suda; brother John Maughan (Jane); nieces Carolyn Suda, Jennifer Taylor (Ben), Ellen Muench, and Heather Smith; and nephew Brian Muench.
Peg spent her life surrounded by the love of her family and friends, with whom she cherished every moment. She had a rewarding 40-year career at Marshalls in Shrewsbury and was known for her dedication and warm personality. Peg was a longtime member of Chapel Beach Club where she spent countless summers enjoying her grandchildren and soaking up the sun. An avid reader, she enjoyed spirited conversation, offering wisdom, perspective and insight. Her debate skills will be sorely missed. She was a devoted Catholic who shared her faith, kindness and laughter with those around her.
Peg’s memory will live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved her. She will be deeply missed.
A memorial visitation was held Dec. 10 at Thompson Memorial Home, Red Bank. A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated Dec. 11 at the Church of the Nativity, Fair Haven. Interment followed at Mount Olivet Cemetery, Middletown.
