Angela M. Galassi

Angela M. Galassi née Vedovi, resident of Shrewsbury, formerly of Grand Rapids, Michigan, and Rumson, passed away peacefully Feb. 6, 2023, at the age of 95.

Born in 1927 to Arnaldo and Angela Vedovi in New York City, Angela had fond memories of summers at a family home in Canadensis, Pennsylvania. During World War II she was a member of the American Women’s Volunteer Service.

Angela attended Manhattanville College for three years before enrolling at the College of Medicine SUNY Downstate, where she received her medical degree while also completing her undergraduate degree at Manhattanville. She completed her internship at St. Vincent’s Hospital in New York City and her residency at Boston Lying-In Hospital in Boston.

In 1955, she was appointed assistant obstetrician and gynecologist, The Presbyterian Hospital, New York City, and opened her first medical office in obstetrics and gynecology at 5255 Park Ave. as Angela M. Vedovi, M.D.

In 1955, she met Mario Galassi, M.D., in Italy. It was love at first sight, and she told her father she had just met the man she was going to marry. They married the following year and resided at The Dakota in New York City until 1960 when they moved to Rumson. From 1961 to 1983, she practiced obstetrics and gynecology at Patterson Army Hospital, Fort Monmouth.

She and Mario loved to travel and to entertain friends in their home. She was an avid tennis player, a voracious reader and an accomplished cook. After her husband’s death in 1992, Angela moved to Grand Rapids, Michingan, where she was active in the community, serving on the Perugia (Italy) Sister City Committee and the program committee of The Grand Forum at Grand Valley State University. She volunteered with the Grand Rapids Symphony and the Grand Rapids Opera.

In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by her sisters, Josephine Pingitore and Ginevra Manganaro. She will be sadly missed by her children, Arnaldo (Kristine) Galassi, Angela “Daisy” (Bobby) Hofer, Francesca (Doug) Wiseman and Paola (Ivan) Lomboy; her grandchildren, Peter, Kristina, Francesca, Angela, Laura, Robert, James, Daisy, Kate, Emily, Elizabeth, Jason and Brandon; and nine great-grandchildren.

A private service will be held at the Gates of Heaven Cemetery in New York.
