Arthur Learoyd Adamson III

851

Arthur Learoyd (Lee) Adamson III of Vero Beach, Florida, was born Aug. 13, 1943, to Lea and Martha Adamson at The Breakers in Palm Beach during wartime.

Lee attended the Lawrenceville School, graduated from Rumson-Fair Haven High School and then graduated from Cornell where he was first in his class. He also attended Harvard Law School.

Lee spent a stint in the marketing department at IBM in Poughkeepsie, New York. During that time he never missed a New England adventure, including the weekend he spent at Woodstock. You can see him in the movie.

Lee loved adventure. After achieving a master’s degree in city and regional planning at University of California Berkeley, where he helped design and establish a very successful commune in the heart of San Francisco, he decided it was time to travel the world on a sailboat. He circumnavigated the globe one and a half times, followed by 10 years in Australia working at Prime Computer.

Upon coming back to the U.S., he worked for 14 years at Intel in Oregon. Growing up on the Shrewsbury River in New Jersey, Lee was an avid sailor. He got the bug again for adventure and bought a 47-foot Catana catamaran, aptly named World Wide Traveller. From 2005-2011 he set out to share many sailing experiences with friends and family. He sailed up and down the Atlantic Coast, three years in the Mediterranean, all the way to Istanbul, back to the states, down through the Caribbean and to Honduras. All these adventures are illustrated on his website wwtraveler.com which you may enjoy visiting.

Lee was predeceased by his parents and his brother Robert. He is survived by his son Arthur Terence Adamson (Peta); his three grandchildren, Grace Modderman, Olivia Adamson and Cameron Adamson, all of Rumson; his brothers, Nicholas Adamson (Beth), Stamford, Connecticut, and James Adamson (Amy), Homestead, Florida; his sister-in-law Susan Fuller, Falmouth, Massachusetts; his niece Morgan Adamson; and his fiancé Stephanie Hurtt.

A memorial service was held Aug. 20 at St. Augustine’s-of-Canterbury Episcopal Church, Vero Beach, Florida.

In lieu of flowers, Lee may be remembered with contributions to The Youth Sailing Foundation of IRC, 17 17th St., Vero Beach, FL  32960, or the nonprofit of your choice.
