Assunta Amore, 89, of Lincroft, died Oct. 13 after battling an aggressive cancer.

Mrs. Amore, better known to friends and family as Susie, was born May 1, 1931 in Porto Empedocle, Agrigento, Sicily to Raimondo and Maria Marullo. She was one of six children and grew up in Sicily until she met her husband, Vincenzo Amore.

Vincenzo and Assunta married Sept. 22, 1952. Shortly after, they moved to the United States to start their lives together in Little Italy, New York. They moved to Brooklyn, where they raised their two children, Caterina and Joseph, before settling in Queens for many years. Susie worked as a dress maker in a dress factory for many years as well as being a homemaker. Susie loved to entertain and most importantly cook for her family; she made the best Italian food you have ever tasted.

Susie and Vincenzo moved to Lincroft to be closer to their daughter Caterina and her family. Shortly after in 2002, Susie and Vincenzo celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary. Susie loved going to dinner at the Inlet Café with her family, where she would always get the seafood platter and a Shirley Temple with extra cherries. She also enjoyed going to Pier Village and taking in the ocean view while walking along the boardwalk with her family.

Assunta was preceded in death by her parents, Raimondo and Maria, as well as her five siblings, Salvatore, Vincent, Joseph, Lena and Grace and her loving husband Vincenzo in 2004.

She is survived by her two children, Caterina Murray of New Jersey and her husband Robert, and Joseph Amore of Georgia and his wife Donna; her two grandchildren, Michael Amore of Texas and his wife Jennifer, and Christel Murray and her fiancé Steven; and her two great-grandchildren, Isabella and Evie.

Assunta was a strong, nurturing, loving and religious woman. She had a quick wit and could make you laugh when you least expected it. She will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her.

In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation in her name to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital or The American Cancer Society. Arrangements are under the direction of John F. Pfleger Funeral Home, Middletown.
