Barbara Ann Stender, née Ruh, formerly of Little Silver, passed away peacefully Feb. 8, 2026, shortly after receiving communion. Barbara was born Dec. 30, 1933, in Bayonne.
After receiving her degree in education from Kutztown University, Barbara began a decades-long career as an art teacher to hundreds of children in the Rumson School District. Barbara truly loved working with children and was beloved by many of her former students.
Barbara’s greatest love was her children, who all survive her: Jeffrey Stender of Key Largo, Florida; Mark Stender of North East, Maryland; Beverly Kalinsky (Michael) of North East, Maryland; and Bruce Stender of Sacramento, California. There was no fiercer advocate for her children when they were in need. She is also survived by seven grandchildren.
Barbara was preceded in death by her parents, Gus and Loretta Ruh and her brother Gus Jr.
The family would like to extend their gratitude to the caregivers of Visiting Angels, Amedisys and the Charlestown Volunteer Fire Company.
Visitation was held Feb. 18 at Thompson Memorial Home, Red Bank. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. Feb. 19 at St. James Church, 94 Broad St., Red Bank. Burial will follow at Bayview Cemetery in Leonardo.
In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to your local volunteer fire or EMS departments or to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital at stjude.org.
