Barry Gilchrist, 79, of Atlantic Highlands, passed away peacefully Sept. 29, 2024, in his home, surrounded by his loved ones, after a long battle with cancer. He was born in Newark and lived in Atlantic Highlands with his wife Janet Gilchrist.
Barry’s career encompassed many things, including being a tractor-trailer driver, the owner of a lumber company and a continuing presence in the lumber business up until his last days with William G. Moore & Sons.
Surviving is his wife of 54 years, Janet Gilchrist; two daughters, Staci Gilchrist and Jamie (Michael) Hahn; three grandchildren, Cooper, Carter and Corbin Hahn; two sisters, Gail Schmedes and Carol Terplevich; and three nieces, Jen Kuhlman, Shannon Black and Kelly Mendez. On his wife’s side of the family, surviving are his sisters-in-law Deborah (Wayne) Hallard and Yvonne (Dino) Colantino.
Barry was preceded in death by his father Charles Gilchrist; mother Marie Gilchrist; nephew Donnie Kuhlman; and in-laws, Vivian and Frank Russo.
Barry was a U.S. Navy Vietnam veteran. He enjoyed life, spending time on the golf course, at Monmouth Park racetrack and with his family and friends. He was well-liked by all because of his easygoing and genuine demeanor.
Visitation was held Oct. 2 at the John F. Pfleger Funeral Home, Middletown. Funeral services were held Oct. 3 at Westminster Presbyterian Church, Middletown.
