512

John R. Burns, 71, a lifelong resident of Port Monmouth, passed away April 28.

John was born in Irvington, a son of the late Mildred and John T. Burns. His family moved to Port Monmouth when John was a toddler and he lived in the same home ever since. The only time John left home was to serve his country during the Vietnam War. He was stationed on air craft carriers in the United States Navy where he was one of the few cryogenic engineers. When he returned home to Port Monmouth, he found work in the automotive industry in a career that spanned over 42 years.

John was a life member and past captain of the Port Monmouth Fire Company and was currently their financial secretary. He enjoyed gardening and fishing. He looked forward to his fishing trips in the Adirondack Mountains with his buddies. He also enjoyed vacationing in Lake George with his family. John’s favorite pastime was wood working. He was a gifted carver and craftsman. He made rocking horses and trains for the children in his family and carved beautiful statues of birds. His talent even extended to building the gazebo in his yard.

John is survived by his devoted wife of 50 years Diana Burns; their daughter Kelly Osvald; and grandson Joshua. He also leaves behind his in-laws that he considered his siblings: Edward Minson, Thomas Minson, Joseph Minson and Joanne Touhy. John was predeceased by his brother William Lesko in 2012.

Friends and relatives paid their respects April 30 and May 1 with a funeral service at Scott & Kedz Home for Funerals, Belford.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, P.O. Box 187, Memphis, TN 38101 or Port Monmouth Fire Company.
