Charla Tewksbury of Middletown died peacefully in her sleep at her home Nov. 18, with her two children by her side. She was predeceased by her husband of 48 years, Stuart Tewksbury. She is survived by her daughter, Lauren Tewksbury and her husband Albert Alexandrov, her son Geoffrey Tewksbury and his wife Erin Tewksbury, and her two grandsons, Ethan and Jack.
Charla was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, went to high school in Montclair and received her Bachelor of Arts from the University of Rochester. She worked as a social worker until she had her two children, and later went back to school at Fairleigh Dickinson University where she earned her Master of Business Administration.
Charla was always very active in her community, serving on school boards, leading her daughter’s Girl Scout troop, and working with the League of Women Voters and the American Association of University Women, just to name a few. She was an avid collector, first of fossils and pottery, and later of antiques. A lifelong learner, she had a deep and encyclopedic knowledge and love of history, particularly British history and ancient history. She traveled extensively in the last decade of her life, visiting Canada, Great Britain, Ireland and France multiple times, always with an eye to the history of those areas.
Following Charla’s wishes, all funeral arrangements will be private. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to savethechildren.org.
