Cheu, Janey Young, Age: 76, Fair Haven

On May 31, Janey Young Cheu died peacefully at her home in Manhattan at age 76 after an eight- year struggle with Progressive Supra nuclear Palsy. Born in Whittier, Calif., she spent her childhood in San Francisco and graduated from Stanford Univer – sity. She later received her mas- ter’s and doctorate degrees in edu- cation and science education from Rutgers University. Dr. Cheu worked for two decades at ATT/Bell Laborat ories, where she represented the United States in negotiating international telephonic signaling and data trans- missions standards and was awarded the coveted title of Distinguished Member of Technical Staff in 1987. Janey moved to Fair Haven in 1988 and was a strong supporter of the community during her 18 years of residence in the area. She extensively volunteered and served in several board positions with the Fair Haven River Rats Sailing Club, the Fair Haven Environmental Commission, the Fair Haven School Board, the Fair Haven Fire Department Women’s Auxiliary and the Nativity Church. Additionally, she was passionate about cooking, education, the arts, travel, volunteering and her family. She is survived by Richard, her husband of 54 years; her three sons and their spouses, Dwight and Leslie Cheu of Glenmont, N.Y., Elliott Cheu and Jane Maruyama of Tucson, Ariz., and Lloyd Cheu and Douglas Mintz of New York, N.Y.; and her four grandchildren. Visitation will take place on Friday, June 12 from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at the John E. Day Funeral Home, 85 Riverside Ave., Red Bank.
