John C. deVries, 84, of Keansburg, passed away Friday, July 22 after a brief illness. John was born in 1931 to Anna and Gerrit deVries in Newark. He attended Good Council School and later graduated from Essex County Vocational Tech. He began work as an electrician prior to enlisting in the US Marines. After serving two years he returned to work at Electro Protective Corp. During this time he met his wife of 59 years, Maureen. They would have six children. Moving to Bloomfield, John participated with his children at Sacred Heart Church in Boy Scouts, basketball and CYO. He was also an usher.
He was a life member of the Marine Corps League, West Hudson Detachment in Kearny. There he participated in many charity events involving children and Veterans. He was a member of the Veterans Administration Volunteers Service helping at both the Lyons and East Orange VA Hospitals.
John continued working for ADT Security before retiring after 47 years.
He was predeceased by his brothers, Gerrit and Charles; his sister; Charlotte; his son, John Jr.; and a daughter, Elaine Demel. He is survived by his wife, Maureen; sons, Edward, Gerrit and Alan; his daughter, Beth Ann; his granddaughters, Ashleigh, Brynn and Julia; a daughter-in-law, Marcia; and sons-in-law, Robert and Donald.
