Elizabeth “Betty” Fleming, 89, of Middletown, passed away peacefully Dec. 12, 2023, surrounded by her family.
Betty graduated from Middletown High School in Leonardo. She was hired three days after graduation as a Signal School Librarian at Fort Monmouth in Eatontown. She had a 40-year career and retired as a GS-11 administrative assistant to the Army Corps of Engineers.
Betty married the love of her life, John “Jay” Fleming, and they had a beautiful full life. She had two children, son Michael Fleming and his partner Francene Pericas of Hazlet, and daughter Kathleen Barber and her husband Donald of Middletown. She was blessed with two grandchildren, Brittany Barber of Middletown and Michael Barber of Charleston, South Carolina. “Grammie,” as she was lovingly called, was at every and all milestones in their lives. She could be seen in the stands, stages and fields of their many activities, always cheering them on.
Betty was very talented and loved to cook, entertain and open her home to friends and family. She traveled extensively with her husband Jay and lived a truly wonderful life. She will be missed by all who knew and loved her. Rest in peace, Betty.
Visitation was held Dec. 18, 2023, at John F. Pfleger Funeral Home, Middletown. A funeral liturgy was offered Dec. 19 at St. Catherine’s Roman Catholic Church, Middletown. Interment followed at Mt. Olivet Cemetery, Middletown.
