Elizabeth Stewart Tanis, age 91, of Lincroft, passed away peacefully at home July 28, 2024, with her family by her side. She was born July 26, 1933, in her family home to Leslie and Margret Stewart, the 106th resident born in Lincroft.

Elizabeth was predeceased by her husband of 65 years and her two sisters and brother.

As a child, she received many awards for her animals at the Fair and Pet Show held at Brookdale Farms in Lincroft. She was most proud of a first-place award, pinned on by Eleanor Roosevelt with a “Wilke” button.

Elizabeth graduated from Red Bank High School after which she attended Monmouth Junior College, where she met the love of her life, Frederick J. Tanis Sr. of Ocean Grove. After Monmouth Junior College, she attended Upsala College, graduating with a bachelor’s degree in education. Elizabeth married Frederick in 1959 and they resided in Eatontown until 1975 when they moved back to her family home in Lincroft, which her father built in 1927.

Elizabeth taught at Fairview Elementary School in Middletown for a few years before having children and moving to the Eatontown school system. She retired after 34 years. She was an active member of the Red Bank United Methodist Church.

She is survived by her two sons, Frederick Jr. and Stephen; four grandchildren, Elizabeth, Frederick III, Mary and Katie; four great-grandchildren, Noah, Gwendolyn, Malia and Korinne; and many nieces and nephews.

Visitation was held Aug. 2 at Thompson Memorial Home, Red Bank. A service was held Aug. 3 at the funeral home. Burial followed at Fair View Cemetery, Middletown.
