Francis Xavier Keegan Jr., a devoted father, respected professional, cherished friend and beloved member of his community, passed away peacefully at home June 5, 2025, at the age of 86. Born Jan. 22, 1939, in Newark to Francis Xavier Keegan Sr. and Margaret Irene Keegan, and known fondly as “Bud,” his life was defined by loyalty, love and unwavering integrity. He was predeceased by his beloved brother, Phillip Myles Keegan.

A proud graduate of Seton Hall Preparatory School and Seton Hall University, Bud remained a lifelong fan of Pirates basketball, cheering his alma mater through every season. He carried this passion into close friendships and countless court‑side memories.

Bud served his country with honor in the U.S.

Army infantry, where he developed the discipline and humility that shaped every phase of his life.

For over 51 years, Bud built a distinguished career as a wealth management advisor and first vice president of investments at UBS Financial Services. Renowned for his sharp mind, thoughtful advice and genuine relationships, he guided clients with care and earned the respect of colleagues and friends.

His love of horses began during childhood rides with his brother Philip and cousins John and Billy – rides filled with camaraderie and warmth. While Bud’s passion for equestrian pursuits was lifelong, those early years shared with Philip remain tender memories. Though Philip passed away in 1998, his spirit remained close to Bud.

Bud’s dedication led him to serve as a New Jersey Racing commissioner, president of the New Jersey Horsemen’s Association, and president of the New Jersey Breeders Association, positions through which he had a profound impact on the racing community.

Some of Bud’s fondest memories came from his time spent at the backside of Monmouth Park racetrack, surrounded by his horses, trusted trainers and close friends.

That community brought him deep joy, camaraderie and purpose.

He also found great happiness on the greens of Spring Lake Golf Club, where he served as president and made lasting contributions to the club he loved so much.

Above all, Bud was devoted to his family. He was a proud, steadfast father to his son, Francis Xavier Keegan III (Mickey), who cared for him with love and devotion in his final years. Their companionship included many cherished Yankees games with hot dogs in hand, simple yet profound moments of connection.

Bud also treasured his close bonds with his nephew, Dr. Ryan Keegan, and niece, Alexis Keegan, whom he loved as dearly as his own. He is survived by many cousins, relatives and an incredibly long list of friends – “You know who you are,” he would say, and he loved you all.

Bud will be remembered for his quiet strength, deep faith, unwavering loyalty and the warmth he brought to every room. His legacy lives on in the family he loved, the communities he served and the countless lives he touched.

Visitation was June 16 at the O’Brien Funeral Home in Wall. A funeral Mass was held June 17 at St. Catharine Church in Spring Lake. Burial followed at St. Catharine Cemetery in Sea Girt. A repast was held at the Spring Lake Golf Club.
