George T. Ortiz, a cherished family man, esteemed businessman and vibrant member of the Middletown community, passed away peacefully June 29, 2025, at the age of 90. Born Dec. 20, 1934, on the beautiful island of Trinidad, George’s journey led him to America in 1967, where he initially settled in Brooklyn. His adventurous spirit eventually brought him to Middletown in 1975, a place he would call home for the rest of his life.
George’s life was marked by his enduring love for his family. He was a devoted husband to his beloved wife, Althea Ortiz, for 54 years until her passing in 2013. Together, they raised two wonderful children, Charles and Teresa Ortiz, who remember their father as a beacon of strength and joy. George was also a loving brother to Elliott Ortiz, Marina Marti, and Elizabeth Allad, and he fondly remembered his late siblings, Eugene, Joyce and Virginia.
Professionally, George was the epitome of the American dream. His entrepreneurial spirit shone brightly as he navigated the business world with charisma and determination. As a travel agent, he explored the globe, sharing his passion for adventure with others. Later, he became a pioneer in the entertainment industry, opening the first video store in the area, World Video on Route 35 in Holmdel, and subsequently expanding with Monmouth Video in Keansburg. His work ethic and innovative mindset left a lasting impact on the community.
George’s zest for life extended to his many interests. A sports enthusiast through and through, he was an ardent supporter of the New York Mets and Jets, his loyalty unwavering through the highs and lows. His love for horse racing was matched only by his enjoyment of music and dance.
George’s talent on the steel drums was legendary, and his ability to light up a dance floor was unparalleled, a testament to his joyful spirit. In his quieter moments, George could be found watching the news on television, staying informed and engaged with the world around him.
George T. Ortiz lived a full and vibrant life, touching the hearts of many. His legacy will continue to inspire those fortunate enough to have known him, and his memory will be cherished forever.
A memorial Mass will be celebrated at noon July 7 at St. Catherine’s Church, Bray Avenue, Middletown.
